Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society
The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society champions the life & legacy of Noah Webster; American educator, lawyer, lexicographer and author of the American Dictionary of the English Language, first published in 1828. Webster is also the author of the American Spelling Book (1783), which taught generations of American students to read and sold over 60 million copies during his lifetime. It is commonly referred to as the “Blue Back Speller”.
The Webster homestead was constructed in 1747 and restored in 1962 by the Noah Webster Foundation, a private 501(c)(3) organization. The site is now a National Historic Landmark.
In 1970, the West Hartford Historical Society merged with the Noah Webster House Foundation and serves as the repository of three centuries of artifacts & archives from the town’s storied past. The museum welcomes student researchers, historians, teachers and authors for academic projects.
The Historic House & exhibit spaces are open to the public Monday through Friday, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm, and Saturdays from 10:00 am -2:00 pm.

CRIS Solution
Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society continuously seeks ways to improve access to their historic house. For individuals unable to read exhibit displays, the CRISAccess® Tour is an easy-to-use solution. Visitors are invited to scan QR Codes located throughout the house to trigger human-narrated “talking exhibits” about Noah Webster’s profound impact on American education as well as life during the late 1700s and 1800s in West Hartford.
